A Visit to Visual Sound

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

Last week I took the short trip down to Visual Soundin Spring Hill, TN. Visual Sound are the makers of such products as the 1-spot power supply, numerous pedals, and a new line of Workhorse tube amps. Bob Weil, president and founder, was kind enough to invite me over for a look at their current range of products, and to test drive the new line of amps. I was already a fan of their Route 66, H2O, and Jekyll and Hyde pedals. For those of you who are not yet familiar with them, they are all dual function pedals. For example, the H2O features both switchfootable delay and chorus, while the Route 66 features compression and overdrive.

The amps were very impressive tonally, and had some very handy features. First off, you can switch between 6L6 or EL34 output tubes with the flick of a switch. Also, the bias for the output tubes can be set by a very user friendly rear mounted adjustment that lights green or red to indicate balance and whether you are biasing it hotter or colder. The amps also feature a very unique grill that helps disperse sound more evenly. I am usually not a fan of 1-12 amps because of their “beamy-ness.” The custom speaker grill addresses that problem head on. Attenuating harsh high-end, and dispersing the sound of the amp more evenly.

Here is a quick snap I took of Bob holding a Jekyll and Hyde with one of his new Workhorse amps.

Thanks to Bob Weil for letting me drop by. It was a pleasure.
