Truetone Lounge - Redd Volkaert
April 17, 2020
I first met Redd Volkaert at Brad Paisley's wedding reception on March 16th, 2003. He was hired by Brad to play it, and Redd was kind enough to let me sit in with his band. I did not know many of the Hollywood, or Music Business big wigs that were there, so playing with Redd was something much more fun to do than awkwardly gawking at Patrick Stewart. This interview took a while to make happen, as Redd was living in Austin, TX at the time this was filmed. This had to be one of the most fun interviews I have ever done.
In the latest installment of the Truetone Lounge, Redd Volkaert shares with us his journey from the bars of Vancouver, Canada, to the stages with Merle Haggard, to his Grammy win for his work with Brad Paisley, to his current status as one of the great Honky-Tonk guitar heroes. Along the way, Volkaert heaps praise on bandleader extraordinaire, Don Kelley, for his powerful influence, and the thrill of filling Roy Nichol’s shoes in Merle Haggard’s band. In the gear department, we discuss what he looks for in a Tele, and his working relationships with both Grammatico amps, and Durham Electronics effects.
